The Range

Four Wines, One Hillside

We bottle only what the terraces give us. In a hard year the reserve stays in barrel, and in a generous one we make a little more rosé than we planned.

Bura

Plavac Mali

Named for the wind that scours these slopes clean each winter. Dark cherry and dried fig, with a saline edge that only the seaward rows give us.

Vapno

Pošip

Chalk and white peach, from the parcel where the topsoil runs out at forty centimetres. Fermented cool, then eight months on its lees.

Grebeni

Plavac Mali · Reserve

Our steepest terraces, picked by hand in three passes. Twenty-two months in Slavonian oak and another two years lying in the cellar before release.

Ruža

Rosé of Plavac Mali

Four hours on skins, no longer. Wild strawberry, blood orange and a dry, stony finish. We make roughly three thousand bottles and they rarely see October.

The Estate

Thirty-four hectares of stone that had to be moved by hand

The terraces above Orebić were cut in the 1920s, one dry-stone wall at a time, because there was no flat ground to be had and the family wanted to make wine anyway. Most of those walls are still standing. We repair about sixty metres of them every winter.

What grows on them is mostly Plavac Mali, planted at 280 metres where the nights stay cool enough to hold acidity through a hot September. The Pošip sits lower and closer to the water, on the parcel we call Vapno — limestone — for the obvious reason.

We farm organically, though we have never bothered to certify it, and we pick everything by hand because a tractor cannot get up there in the first place.

In the Cellar
My grandfather cut these terraces out of limestone with a crowbar and a mule. We have added degrees, better barrels and a proper cooling system since — but the wine still comes out of the stone, and the stone has not changed its mind about anything.
